In today’s post, I’m sharing the interior design trends we’re seeing for 2026 and beyond. Before diving in, it’s worth saying that true style is always timeless. At Sophie Paterson Interiors, we design spaces with longevity in mind, interiors that feel relevant and refined not just now, but for many years to come.
Take a look at some of our past projects, though they span years, the design choices still feel fresh and elegant today.
Here’s what’s shaping interiors right now:
1. Nickel and Unlacquered Brass
While antique brass remains popular, a major interior design trend we are seeing in 2026 is the resurgence of nickel. Unlike chrome, nickel carries a subtle warmth underneath, giving it a more classical feel. These metals add understated elegance and work beautifully in both modern and traditional interiors.
2. Layered Patterns
Layering patterns is a defining interior design trend in 2026 that brings depth, personality, and a curated feel to a room. The key is to balance scale, type, and colour: pair a bold, large-scale pattern with smaller-scale patterns and solid or textured tones, mix different pattern types for interest, and keep a unified colour palette so the space feels harmonious rather than chaotic. Repeat accent colours across patterns to tie everything together, vary pattern directions for a dynamic look, and consider tone-on-tone or textured fabrics like linen, velvet, or woven materials to add subtle depth. Use neutrals or natural materials such as wood and stone as a buffer to prevent the space from feeling overwhelming, and start small with cushions, throws, or rugs if layering feels daunting. Thoughtful attention to these details creates a room that feels layered, and intentionally designed.
3. Elaborate Embroidery
Elaborate embroidery is taking centre stage as a creative interior design trend. We’ve long embraced monograms, but in 2026, embroidery is being taken to the next level. Think intricate motifs that bring personality, and craftsmanship to your soft furnishings. We’ve collaborated with Gilly Nicolson to create a stunning collection of luxury linens, featuring a wide range of embroidered designs, from elephants and giraffes to florals, acorns, bunnies, dachshunds, and more. Many of these motifs are inspired by our Fromental Wallpaper range, translating the elegance of hand-painted designs into embroidery. Each piece reflects the same luxurious attention to detail that we bring to our interior projects, adding artistry and individuality to every home.
4. Warmer and Darker Wood Stains
One of the key interior design trends for 2026 is a shift back toward warmer, darker wood stains. I’ve always loved the warmth and character that wood brings to a home, however, light woods have dominated interiors for the past five years, and richer, natural tones were often avoided. However, I’m now seeing so much more variety: burr, mahogany, walnut, oak, each with its own unique character and texture, giving a room that “collected over time” feel.
5. Antiques and Characterful Pieces
More and more of my clients are embracing antiques, and I love incorporating them because they immediately add interest, character, and incredible craftsmanship to a space, often offering great value for money compared to new pieces. For me, timeless interiors are all about layering styles and influences so that when you look around, you can’t immediately tell when a room was designed, it just feels curated and enduring, no matter how many years go by.
6. Wall-Mounted Consoles
Wall-mounted consoles are emerging as a stylish and practical interior design trend for 2026. Perfect for hallways, bathrooms, or smaller spaces, they combine style with clever space-saving design. While we work on large, palatial homes, we also design London properties where entranceways are often narrow and there isn’t room for a traditional console and lamps. In these spaces, wall-mounted consoles provide a practical spot to set down keys or create a moment to pause, while still feeling elegant. This inspired our collaboration with Loom, resulting in a collection of wall mounted consoles featuring sleek marble tops and a beautiful clasp detail.
7. Colour Schemes
Interior design trends in 2026 embrace richer, more considered colour palettes. Light, bright interiors have had their moment, but we’re seeing a shift toward richer, more considered palettes. Deep, jewel-toned colours are being embraced for their warmth, sophistication, and versatility, making them perfect for layering textures and materials: velvets, antique woods, metallic hardware, and sculptural lighting all pop beautifully against moody, dramatic backdrops.
Colour drenching is very much still on trend. This involves using a single tone or tonal variations of the same shade across an entire space, including walls, joinery, and even ceilings. Treating the ceiling as the fifth wall unifies the room, removes visual breaks, and creates a smooth, seamless flow that makes a space feel cohesive, considered, and intentional.
Pantone’s 2026 Colour of the Year, Cloud Dancer, remains a soft, timeless neutral, but the overall palette for the year is about creating interiors that feel calm, cosy, layered, and personal. By combining rich tones, texture, and thoughtful layering, 2026 colours allow spaces to feel luxurious yet lived-in.
8. Statement Hardware
Statement hardware is emerging as a key interior design trend for 2026. People are increasingly bored of integrated handles, and I completely understand why, hardware is the jewellery of an interior. It’s no longer an afterthought, but a key design feature that can instantly add character and craftsmanship to a space. In several recent projects, we’ve designed elaborate, bespoke handles, often planning the joinery around the hardware itself rather than the other way around. That level of consideration makes a huge difference to the final result.
We’ve recently launched a new handle and knob collection with Armac Martin, featuring beautiful reeded detailing combined with an elegant, refined form. It’s a perfect example of how a small detail can have a big impact, elevating even the simplest joinery into something truly special and timeless.
9. Statement Cookers
We’re seeing a shift toward a more traditional, considered look in kitchens, and statement ovens are on trend in a big way in 2026. For years, people wanted to hide and integrate their appliances, but the trend has completely shifted, bold, statement cookers and hoods are now celebrated as the focal point of the kitchen.
With design and functionality having progressed so much, there are now countless elegant options in enamel and metal finishes, allowing a cooker or hood to become a piece full of character and presence. Paired with thoughtful cabinetry, rich textures, and metallic hardware, statement cookers anchor the space while adding personality and style, creating a kitchen that feels layered, curated, and luxurious a space where cooking, entertaining, and everyday living are all elevated.
10. Bathrooms with Personality
Bathrooms are no longer neutral spaces, marking another key interior design trend 2026. They’re an opportunity to express individuality and character. I’m seeing a move toward mixing materials, bolder choices, and layered detailing, with tiles paired alongside marble architraves and jambs to create depth and architectural interest. Marble is still very much part of the picture, but it’s being used in more considered, thoughtful ways, rather than dominating the space.
Colour is also making a strong comeback, particularly through painted vanity units and zellige tiles, which instantly add warmth, texture, and personality. Vanities are often the focal point of the room and one of the biggest investments, so it’s worth selecting beautifully designed pieces with craftsmanship, detail, and character. And don’t overlook the small details, even the most functional elements, such as taps, toilet roll holders, and robe hooks, can communicate luxury when chosen thoughtfully.
Interior Design Trends in 2026 are all about confidence in design. Whether it’s embracing darker tones, layering patterns, or introducing statement hardware, the key is to combine timeless style with thoughtful, personal touches. Interiors should feel enduring but also expressive, reflecting the people who live in them.
