Luxury kitchen design is about more than selecting beautiful surfaces it’s about creating a space that works perfectly for how you live, cook, and entertain. Over my career, I’ve designed numerous of kitchens in London and internationally, each tailored to a client’s lifestyle, routines, and entertaining habits.
A kitchen should feel effortless, yet every detail matters, from the layout and storage to appliances, finishes, lighting, and styling. In this guide, I’ll share my top tips, drawn from years of experience, straight from The Sophie Paterson Academy to help you create a kitchen that is functional, elegant, and timeless.
1. Start Your Kitchen Design with How You Live
One of the most common mistakes in luxury kitchen design is prioritising aesthetics before function. I always begin by understanding my client’s daily routines. In the kitchen module inside the Academy I have written down all key questions to ask yourself or your client so that you can better understand and prioritise the layout of your kitchen. To give you a taster, we ask our clients:
Which appliances do they use every day?
How is food stored?
Are there pain points in the current layout?
These early insights form the foundation of a kitchen that feels tailored, not generic.
MY TOP TIP: Make a list of your/ your client’s top five kitchen frustrations and your/ your client’s most-used appliances before designing. Addressing these ensures the kitchen works effortlessly from the first day.
2. Choose Timeless MATERIALS
Luxury kitchens are defined by surfaces that are both beautiful and enduring. The materials you choose set the tone for the entire space, so it’s worth investing time to select finishes that combine elegance, practicality, and longevity.
Worktops: Marble instantly elevates a kitchen with its natural veining and sense of luxury, but it requires thoughtful care and placement to avoid wear in high-traffic areas. Quartz and sintered stone offer a more practical alternative while maintaining a high-end look, they’re scratch-resistant, low-maintenance, and available in a wide range of colours and patterns to complement any design.
Splashbacks: This is your opportunity to introduce personality or subtle drama. Book-matched marble creates a striking, symmetrical pattern, while antique or smoked mirrors reflect light and add depth to the space. Tiles can add texture and character, but consider grout lines and maintenance when choosing intricate patterns. The key is to select a splashback that enhances the room without overwhelming it.
Cabinet Finishes: Mixing materials adds depth and interest. Timber veneers bring warmth and texture, painted cabinets offer versatility, and lacquered finishes provide a smooth, contemporary look. I often combine these finishes thoughtfully, for example, pairing oak-framed cabinets with a soft matte lacquer to create contrast while keeping the palette cohesive.
Flooring: Large-format stone slabs immediately make a kitchen feel more spacious and luxurious. Limestone, marble, or honed stones work particularly well in both modern and traditional schemes. In my experience, choosing slabs with subtle veining or muted tones helps the room feel calm and timeless, while polished surfaces can enhance brightness in naturally dark spaces.
MY TOP TIP: Layer materials thoughtfully, but maintain a sense of unity by repeating a single element throughout the kitchen. For example, a timber shelf echoing the floor tone or a worktop material repeated on the island edge can tie the scheme together and make even bold combinations feel cohesive.
3. Bring Comfort into Your Kitchen with Soft fINISHES
Soft finishes can transform how a kitchen feels and functions. Fabrics and furniture bring warmth, texture, and comfort to an otherwise hard space of stone, cabinetry, and steel.
Durable Fabrics: Upholstery on bar stools and dining chairs needs to look luxurious but also stand up to daily life. I recommend high Martindale rub test fabrics, wipeable finishes, or treated textiles that can resist spills without losing their beauty. I often use performance fabrics that combine practicality with a refined look, perfect for busy households.
Window Treatments: Roman blinds or subtle fabric panels introduce softness without overwhelming the clean lines of the kitchen. A trim on the leading edge or a contrast border can provide just the right decorative touch while keeping the look simple and elegant.
Furniture Tones: Dining furniture and bar stools don’t need to match cabinetry exactly, in fact, it usually feels more sophisticated if they don’t. Instead, aim for tonal harmony: if your cabinetry is a pale oak, consider a warmer timber chair leg or a soft neutral fabric. This creates cohesion without feeling overly coordinated.
REMEMBER: Small touches go a long way. A statement fabric on bar stools or a beautifully tailored roman blind can add character and elevate the entire room, without introducing clutter.
4. Layer Lighting for Function and Mood
Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in luxury kitchen design, it not only ensures the room works for cooking, but also sets the mood for entertaining and everyday life.
Task Lighting: Under-cabinet LED strips or spotlights should be positioned carefully to illuminate work surfaces without glare.
Feature Lighting: Pendant lights over islands or dining tables are an opportunity to make a statement. I tend to select designs that feel sculptural yet subtle, ensuring they enhance rather than dominate the scheme.
Ambient Lighting: A kitchen should feel connected to the rest of the home, not just like a workspace. Perimeter lighting, dimmable circuits, or soft uplighting can add warmth and atmosphere, allowing the room to transition seamlessly from morning prep to evening entertaining.
MY TOP KITCHEN LIGHTING TIP: I always specify 2700K warm white lighting throughout the home, including the kitchen. It creates a cohesive atmosphere, makes the space feel luxurious, and avoids the overly “clinical” look of cooler lighting temperatures.
5. Flowers & Finishing Touches
Fresh flowers are non-negotiable for me. I try to buy them on the day to ensure they look their best. My pet hate is arrangements that are too tall, so you have to peer through them to see the people sitting opposite. Opt for lots of lower arrangements that feel abundant but don’t interrupt the flow of conversation. This is also a more cost-effective method, as you don’t have to purchase such a large bouquet and can easily arrange them yourself.
5. Style Thoughtfully
Accessories and art are the finishing touches that make a kitchen feel lived-in and personal rather than purely utilitarian. Done well, styling adds depth, character, and warmth without creating visual clutter.
Worktop Styling: I prefer to style worktops with functional yet beautiful items, such as wooden chopping boards, salt and pepper mills, cook books, utensils in ceramic jars and faux plants.
Grouping objects of varying heights creates balance and interest, while trays can help corral smaller pieces into a deliberate composition.
Less is always more when it comes to styling kitchens. Group items thoughtfully, keep compositions simple, and allow your finishes and surfaces to shine.

Every decision should feel intentional, from the height of your cabinetry to the fabric on a bar stool. When all these details come together, the result is a timeless kitchen that adds value, enhances daily life, and brings joy for years to come.
