A Day in the Life of an Interior Designer

Ever wondered what a day in the life of an interior designer really looks like? I can tell you now – it’s non-stop, no two days are the same, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

At Sophie Paterson Interiors, we’re lucky enough to be working on a range of incredible luxury interior design projects both here in the UK and internationally. Every member of our interior design team plays a vital role in each project, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

What does a typical day in the life of an Interior Designer look like?

Our days start with team meetings, where we go through project updates, discuss the next steps, and tackle any challenges that might have come up. Then it’s straight into site visits, client meetings (whether in the office, on-site, or via Zoom), and endless back-and-forth with suppliers and contractors. It’s busy, but it’s also hugely rewarding.

Beyond the design work, we spend a lot of time keeping up with social media, communicating with collaborators, and staying on top of all the latest launches from our favourite suppliers.

What really goes on behind the scenes in our studio?

If you’ve ever wondered how we manage everything from concept to completion, we’ve put together this little video to give you a peek behind the curtain – everything from supplier meetings to mood board design sessions and weekly team briefings, we capture it all.

You’ll even get to see our “Good News” segment, which we start every team meeting with – it’s such a lovely way to kick off the day!

How do we bring our designs to life?

One of the most common questions I get asked is about the software we use to create our design presentations.

InDesign is our go-to for putting together beautifully detailed client presentations – perfect for bringing a scheme to life visually.

Once a client signs off on the mood boards, we move on to more detailed visuals.

SketchUp is great for quick 3D models, while AutoCAD is essential for all the technical drawings, from floor plans to detailed elevations.

We also use Photoshop to add a more polished, realistic feel to our 2D visuals. For those just starting out, Microsoft PowerPoint is actually a fantastic tool for creating simple yet effective design presentations.

A Creative Hub: Our New Office Space

One of my favourite parts of any project is the early scheming and concept work, which we always do in our gorgeous new office. Our materials library is the dreamiest space – so peaceful and inspiring.

There’s nothing better than seeing those initial ideas evolve from fabric swatches and samples into fully realised spaces.

How do we present the designs to our clients?

A huge part of our job as interior designers is communicating our vision to clients in a way that brings everything to life.

This goes beyond just putting together a selection of beautiful images. We carefully curate every presentation, making sure each material and finish is shown in the context of the overall design.

CGI renderings take this one step further – they’re a game changer when it comes to helping clients visualise the final space.

There’s something magical about seeing a concept come to life in photorealistic detail. It really helps our clients feel confident and excited about their new home!

Who makes up our Interior Design team?

Managing multiple projects at once, each with its own unique challenges, takes an incredible team.

At Sophie Paterson Interiors, we’re a close-knit group of 12, each bringing something different to the table. We have talented designers, experts in FF&E, architectural design specialists, and an accounts team keeping everything running smoothly.

My role is to oversee it all and ensure our projects are delivered to the highest standard.

Every project has its own challenges. Working with listed buildings comes with layers of regulations and approvals, while new-build properties require close collaboration with architects, AV consultants, and other specialists. It’s this teamwork that allows us to create such special homes for our clients.

Who really runs our office?

Of course, no day in the studio would be complete without our two little office dogs, Olive and Pip. They might be small, but they definitely think they’re in charge!
